CTOnews.com, July 4 (Xinhua)-- Indian telecom operator Reliance Jio will launch Jio Bharat phones priced at 999 rupees (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 88 yuan) in an effort to capture market share in rural / poor areas of the country.

Although it is only a 4G phone, it is already the cheapest Internet-connected phone in the world.

In addition, Jio offers users a package of 123 rupees (currently about 11 yuan) per month, including unlimited voice calls, 14 GB data traffic, UPI payments, and many entertainment options, such as support for JioCinema, JioSaavan and FM Radio.

Of course, users can also choose a package of 1234 rupees (currently about RMB109), which provides 168GB data and unlimited call time every month. It is worth mentioning that these plans only apply to users who buy Jio-branded phones.

It is said that Jio's Jio Bharat phone, launched in partnership with other brands (currently only Karbonn), also offers two plans: the Rs179 plan with a 28-day validity period and the 1799 rupee annual plan, which is basically the same as the Jio Bharat plan.

Officials say the aim of launching the phone is to accelerate the realization of the company's "2G-MUKT BHARAT" vision. The company also plans to launch a Jio Bharat phone in partnership with Karbonn. Reliance Jio also confirmed that other brands will soon adopt the "Jio Bharat platform" to create "Jio Bharat phones".

Akkash Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, said: "there are still 250 million mobile phone users in India who are still 'trapped' in the 2G era, unable to take advantage of the basic functions of the Internet, and the world is at the forefront of the 5G revolution.

According to reports, the first batch of about 1 million Jio Bharat phones will go on sale on July 7, 2023.
