Cellular Communications and Wi-Fi camp compete for 6GHz band, British regulators propose a sharing plan

CTOnews.com July 7 news, cellular communications and Wi-Fi two camps are competing for 6GHz (6425-7125MHz) band, at this stage, the former has achieved a phased victory. Both camps want to "own" the 6GHz band, while the British Communications Authority (Ofcom) is seeking a compromise to allow the two camps to share the 6GHz band.

Ofcom proposes a "mixed sharing" solution and provides two implementation examples, which are summarized here by CTOnews.com:

Split indoor and outdoor: Wi-Fi routers tend to be located indoors-carrying broadband traffic in local indoor areas, while mobile transmitters are mostly outdoor-providing wider coverage.

Therefore, we can explore the possibility of using Wi-Fi indoors while allowing the use of authorized mobile devices outdoors.

Most of the data traffic transmitted on geographically shared mobile networks tends to be concentrated in relatively small sites. It may be possible to enable licensed mobile use in specific high-traffic locations while allowing Wi-Fi to be used elsewhere.

The scheme can also give priority to the use of Wi-Fi in specific areas with high demand, while allowing the use of mobile devices in other areas.

Regulators are seeking advice on both options and may implement one based on feedback. The agency indicated that in addition to determining the mechanism for implementing the hybrid sharing method, it also hoped to coordinate the allocation of this band in the international market in order to achieve economies of scale of the equipment.
