CTOnews.com, July 7 (Xinhua)-- according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on July 7, electric vehicle sales in the United States surged 50% in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year, but the growth rate slowed due to inventory overstocking at dealers.

Major U.S. automakers sold 557330 electric vehicles in the first half of 2023, a growth rate much faster than traditional fuel vehicles, the Wall Street Journal quoted data released by research firm Motor Intelligence on Thursday. By contrast, sales of conventional fuel vehicles increased by about 10 per cent in the first half compared with the same period a year earlier.

While many car companies have chosen to boost demand for electric vehicles through promotions, the growth of electric vehicle sales so far this year has lagged behind the 65 per cent growth for all of 2022, according to Motor Intelligence.

The inventory of electric vehicles at major dealers has also grown to a "record" level, according to Cox Automotive, a research firm. As of the end of June, about 90000 electric vehicles were overstocked at dealerships or were being shipped to vehicle stores, a fivefold increase from a year ago.
