A group called Hacker Actionism claimed responsibility for the attack and demanded a $300000 ransom from the AO3 team, otherwise hackers would continue to attack AO3's servers and "suspend" AO3's services for several weeks.

It is reported that the AO3 platform is fully supported by user donations and maintained by volunteers, so the platform is actually unable to pay the ransom.

Flashpoint, a security analysis company, said the "hacker activism" group had been active this year and had previously targeted Microsoft and a number of European commercial companies and demanded high ransoms to spare them.

Flashpoint claimed that the composition and actual motive of the hacker group are not yet known, and it will take some time to judge.
