According to the film, the title of "what kind of Life do you want to live" pays tribute to the novelist Yoshino Genisaburo's book of the same name published in 1937, but the film story is completely original by MiyazakiHayao. The film tells the story of an incredible adventure between a young Muzhenren who lost his mother after World War II and a talking blue heron.

The English title of the film, The Boy and the Heron (Boys and Blue Herons), will be released in North America later this year. It will adopt the marketing style of Studio Ghibli in Japan and will no longer release any advance marketing content.
