Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 1 (Xinhua) after electronic products are scrapped, their internal circuit boards are usually cut by large shredders and then treated by magnetic force, washing and incineration to extract specific metals and minerals. The circuit board itself is made of fiberglass and epoxy resin, which are of low value after cutting, so they are often treated as waste, buried, incinerated or piled up. This not only causes a waste of resources, but also causes pollution to the environment.
To solve this problem, the British company Jiva Materials has developed a soluble circuit board called Soluboard. This kind of circuit board is made of natural fiber wrapped in a non-toxic polymer, which can be decomposed as long as it is soaked in hot water of about 90 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, so that the components originally welded on the circuit board can be completely separated. easy to recycle. The remaining fibers and polymers are non-toxic, compostable and do not burden the environment.
Infineon, Germany's largest semiconductor manufacturer, has used Soluboard technology to make demonstration boards and is studying how to recycle "discrete power devices" at the end of its useful life in order to promote recycling and reduce the carbon cost of producing new devices. Infineon estimates that using Soluboard instead of traditional FR-4 circuit boards can reduce carbon emissions by 60 per cent, or 10.5kg of carbon and 620g of plastic per square meter of circuit board production. Considering that as many as 18 billion square meters of circuit boards are produced worldwide every year, this technology has great potential.
CTOnews.com noted that Soluboard technology has also been used in the United States, and researchers at the University of Washington have worked with Microsoft to design an "environmentally friendly mouse" whose core is a circuit board made using Soluboard. It is found that the data transmission performance of the embedded chip is similar to that of the traditional circuit board. On the other hand, the chip recovered after the decomposition of the circuit board can be reused after removing moisture from the oven without performance degradation.
Of course, Soluboard technology still needs to be tested in the real environment before it can be widely used. And the electronic recycling industry is a low-profit industry that may not get more value from soluble circuit boards, but any advances in electronic technology that reduce the use of plastics and are easier to decompose are noteworthy.
