CTOnews.com, August 2 (Xinhua)-- last week Apple released an update to iOS 16.6, bringing 16 security fixes to iPhone and iPad users. Apple has now closed the authentication channel for iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1, which means that users who have upgraded to the new version of the system can no longer be downgraded to this version.

IOS 16.5.1 was released on June 21 and fixed a problem with the lightning interface to the USB camera adapter, as well as two security vulnerabilities. One of the vulnerabilities allows arbitrary code execution with kernel privileges, and the other is the WebKit vulnerability, which allows malicious web content to execute arbitrary code. Apple also provides additional security patches for iOS 16.5.1 through several security response updates.

IOS 16.6, released on July 24th, fixes 16 security vulnerabilities in areas such as the kernel, Find My, WebKit and Apple's neural engine. Apple says two of these vulnerabilities may be being actively exploited.

CTOnews.com notes that iOS 16.6 may be the last update for iOS 16 before the official release of iOS 17 this fall, which means it may be the last software update for devices that do not support iOS 17, such as iPhone 8 and iPhone X. However, Apple is likely to provide at least another year of security patches for these devices.
