CTOnews.com August 9 news, Saudi Arabia recently announced a new regulation, from 2025, all mobile phones and other electronic devices sold in the country market must use USB Type-C interface for charging and data transmission. This initiative aims to improve user experience, ensure high-quality charging and data transfer technology, and reduce the generation of e-waste to promote environmental sustainability.

USB Type-C is a universal standard for wired connectivity of smart devices, capable of transmitting data and power simultaneously over a single cable. This technology replaces previous standards such as Micro-USB and USB-A. One of the features of USB Type-C is that users can plug the cable into the device in any direction. USB Type-C interface also enables fast charging and fast data transfer, providing a better user experience.

Saudi Arabia This provision will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, which will start on January 1, 2025, covers a wide range of devices, including mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game devices, headphones, headsets, amplifiers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, portable speakers and wireless routers. The second phase will start on April 1, 2026 and will cover laptops.

Saudi Arabia requires all companies and suppliers operating in the country's market to comply with USB Type-C standards and comply with technical and regulatory specifications for relevant technical regulations and standards. Saudi Arabia expects this measure to save its consumers more than 170 million Saudi riyals (CTOnews.com note: about 327 million yuan) every year and reduce about 15 tons of e-waste production every year.

Saudi Arabia is the second region to implement unified charging interface regulations after the European Union, which passed legislation in 2022 requiring electronic devices to be equipped with USB-C interfaces before being sold in the region.
