BYD has announced that it will launch its second electric car, the Dolphin, in Japan, and plans to open more than 100 stores there by the end of 2025.

BYD said on Friday that it would start selling its second electric car in Japan this month in an effort to gain a foothold in the Japanese market. Prior to this, the Japanese market has given birth to a number of global best-selling car brands.

BYD announced in a statement that it would begin to accept orders for BYD Dolphin from September 20, which could cause concern among Japanese competitors. In the rapid transition to electric cars, Japanese manufacturers in China have become worse off in the face of the rise of BYD and other Chinese manufacturers.

BYD will also soon announce the pricing of the dolphin car, which starts at 116800 yuan in China.

BYD currently plans to sell only battery-powered pure electric vehicles in Japan, rather than cars with other powertrain technologies, such as plug-in hybrids.

BYD will offer regular and remote versions of the dolphin that are compatible with Japan's CHAdeMO charging standard. Since then, BYD plans to launch its Seal model at the end of the year or early next year.

BYD has not set a sales target for the Japanese market. A company spokesman declined to say how many cars would need to be sold in Japan each year to make a profit.

Since opening its first store in Yokohama in February, BYD has sold about 700 ATTO 3 electric SUV units for 4.4 million yen ($30205.26).

BYD plans to open more than 100 stores in Japan by the end of 2025. This year, its Japanese subsidiary signed a car distribution contract with Sojitz, a Japanese trading company.
