CTOnews.com, September 19 (Xinhua)-- Swedish car brand Volvo plans to become a pure electric car brand by 2030. To achieve this goal, the company will stop producing diesel-engined cars in early 2024, becoming the first mainstream traditional carmaker to abandon diesel cars altogether.

Tuyuan PexelsCTOnews.com noted that Volvo had long expressed interest in cutting diesel models and had spun off its internal combustion engine development business into a company called Aurobay, a joint venture with its parent company Geely. Late last year, Volvo also sold its stake in Aurobay and said it would not invest any more money in new internal combustion engines.

Volvo announced the decision at the Climate week in New York, marking a rapid transformation for Volvo. In 2019, the year Volvo launched its first electric car, the XC40 Recharge, most of the Volvo models sold in Europe were diesel. Since then, sales of diesel vehicles have fallen sharply because of consumer concerns about climate change and more NOx emissions from diesel engines.

Jim Rowan, Volvo's boss, said "electric powertrain is our future" and said the company was "fully focused on building a range of high-quality, all-electric cars to meet all our customers' expectations of Volvo". Volvo will launch new EX30 and EX90 pure electric SUV in the coming months as part of its transition to an all-electric brand.

Volvo also recently cut cars and travel models from the UK market, focusing on the higher-selling SUV series.
