Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, October 12, according to a paper published by the founder of Digiconomist in the journal Joule on October 10, it is believed that generative AI, represented by ChatGPT and Bing Chat, will produce a huge energy footprint and may exceed the electricity demand of some countries in the future.
"given the growing demand for AI services, AI-related energy consumption is likely to increase significantly in the next few years," said Alex DeVries, author of the paper, from the Free University of Amsterdam. The study stressed that by 2027, the energy consumed by generative AI could power a small country for a year, equivalent to about 85-134 TWh.
Hugging Face, a New York-based AI developer, reported that its multilingual text generation AI tool consumed about 433 MWH during training, enough to power 40 average American homes for a year.
The energy footprint of artificial intelligence does not end with training. DeVries' analysis shows that when the tool is put into work (generating data according to prompts), every time the tool generates text or images, it also uses a lot of computing power, which consumes a lot of energy. For example, the daily running cost of ChatGPT might be 564 MWh.
Google has incorporated generative artificial intelligence into its e-mail service and is testing the use of artificial intelligence to power its search engine. The company currently handles as many as 9 billion searches a day. Based on the data, DeVries estimates that if Google used artificial intelligence for every search, it would need about 29.2 TWh of electricity a year, equivalent to a year's electricity consumption in Ireland.
