CTOnews.com, October 14, local time 13, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and space exploration technology company SpaceX launched the Psyche probe. The probe orbited the metal asteroid Psyche of the same name for 26 months and scanned it to analyze its gravity, magnetism and composition.
According to reports, the launch was completed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The probe, carried by SpaceX's largest rocket, the Falcon Heavy Rocket, is expected to arrive at its destination in August 2029, with a total mileage of 2.2 billion miles (3.5 billion km).
CTOnews.com Note: the Psyche asteroid, first discovered in 1852, is the largest of about nine known asteroids, named after the Greek mythological goddess of soul. the asteroid has a width of 173miles (279km) and has two crater-like depressions whose "day" equals four earth hours. Psyche is located on the outer edge of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and the probe is scheduled to approach Mars in May 2026.
It is mainly composed of metals, which are said to contain iron, nickel, gold and other elements, with a total value of up to (10 × 1000 quadrillion) billion dollars. But NASA said the resources would not be exploited but would be studied in orbit to give researchers a better understanding of Earth's core components. "this asteroid is only for scientific exploration, not for profit."
