CTOnews.com AlmaLinux is creating a distribution that does not contain Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) code, but is RHEL-compatible.

Benny Vasquez, president of the AlmaLinux OS Foundation, attended the All Things Open community conference and stated that the goal of the AlmaLinux distribution is to be compatible with the Application Binary Interface (ABI) so that it can continue to use the CentOS Stream source code provided by Red Hat.

AlmaLinux extracts other related code from the Red Hat Common Base Image and upstream Linux code.

Steven Vaughan-Nichols of ZDNet reports: The hardest part is Red Hat's Linux kernel updates, Vasquez adds: "These kernel updates are not available without violating Red Hat's license agreement. "

Vasquez said the solution at this stage is to obtain security patches from other sources, and these adjustments will allow AlmaLinux to no longer accept Red Hat restrictions and be able to distribute upstream security fixes faster than Red Hat.

AlmaLinux, for example, fixed AMD microcode vulnerabilities a week earlier than Red Hat. Officials say AlmaLinux's overall goal remains RHEL compatibility.
