Inside Apple, employees are discussing giving its MR (Mixed Reality) Vision Pro a more professional use as a tool for diagnosing and treating mental health problems, people familiar with the matter said today.

In June, Apple released the long-awaited MR Vision Pro, bringing more than seven years of development work to a successful conclusion and bringing Apple into a new computing market.

But so far Apple has primarily positioned Vision Pro as a tool for work and play. But several people familiar with the matter said today that Apple is considering giving it another, more specialized use, to diagnose and treat mental health problems.

These features will use Vision Pro's cameras and sensors to measure a person's facial expressions to determine whether the user suffers from depression, anxiety, stress or post-traumatic stress disorder, people familiar with the matter said. One of the people familiar with the matter also said Vision Pro can display images and sounds that help improve the wearer's mood.

Currently, there are regulations that restrict companies from promoting medical features in their devices without regulatory approval. But over time, Apple has gained some regulatory approval, such as the Apple Watch's health features, including detecting irregular heart rates, which has also expanded the Apple Watch's appeal beyond fashion accessories.

Apple has previously said the Vision Pro will go on sale in early 2024 for $3499.
