CTOnews.com, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) British gasoline and convenience retailer EG Group announced on Monday that it will buy Tesla's ultra-fast charging piles to expand its electric vehicle charging network in Europe.

EG Group said its goal is to expand the charging network from the current more than 600 charging posts to more than 20,000. EG Group said that the first batch of Tesla charging piles will be installed by the end of this year, but did not provide details of the total purchase cost or timetable, but these "open network" Tesla charging piles will be open to all brands of electric vehicle drivers.

The popularity of electric vehicles is seen as key to climate targets in the UK and Europe, and the car industry has called for faster expansion of public charging networks to encourage people to buy electric cars.

Tesla said in February that it would open part of its US charging network to competitors' electric vehicles as part of a $7.5 billion federal plan to expand the use of electric vehicles and reduce carbon emissions.

BP.L 's electric car charger division said last month that it would order a $100m Tesla ultra-fast charger for its US network. Ford also said last month that it would add more Tesla supercharging stations to its electric vehicle charging network, more than previously predicted.

As of October 1, just over 49000 charging devices have been installed for electric vehicles in the UK, according to the UK government.
