Mercedes-Benz launched YASA axial flux motor: weight is only radial motor 1x3, power density is increased by 3 times

CTOnews.com November 16 news, in this afternoon's 2023 Guangzhou Motor Show Mercedes-Benz Technology Innovation Day, YASA axial flux motor technology was officially launched in China, this technology is the first mass production of Mercedes-Benz AMG.EA pure electric platform models.

CTOnews.com learned that the axial flux motor was developed by British motor company YASA, a 100% holding subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. Compared with the traditional radial flux motor, the thickness and weight of the YASA axial motor is only 1 / 3 of the traditional electric vehicle radial flux motor, but the power density and torque density are increased by 3 times and 2 times respectively.

In addition, the axial motor is a double-rotor + single-stator structure in the form of oil-cooled heat dissipation and wheel edge arrangement. The electromagnetic field of the axial flux motor expands along the parallel direction of the motor rotation axis, which is said to produce stronger magnetic field, higher power density and higher power output continuously under the same volume.

Thanks to its small size and weight, it is theoretically possible for a tram to carry multiple YASA axial flux motors, and perhaps in the near future, we will see a Mercedes-Benz superelectric sports car.
