Developers create a web version of the System 7 Mac system simulator to experience the 1991 Apple Macintosh
CTOnews.com November 20, 2016-Developers who previously launched Apple's System 7 Mac emulator app have now created a version that runs directly in a Web browser.
System 7 Mac is Apple's classic operating system, later renamed Mac OS, with version 7.6 named Mac OS 7. This naming scheme evolved into Mac OS X and today macOS.
System 7 Mac was Apple's longest-lived operating system, launched in 1991 and replaced by Mac OS 8 in 1997. The System 7 Mac spanned from Motorola's 68000 series to PowerPC processors, and while it introduced many popular new features, its introduction was controversial. It was the first version not to run on older floppy drive Macintosh models, and it also took up so much memory that even some hard drive models struggled.
This web-based version of System 7 Mac Simulator was created by developer Leonardo Russo and is System 7.0.1, based on the Mini vMac open source simulator.
When you visit the site, it downloads a 6MB disk image (which takes just a few seconds) and launches a virtual 1991 Macintosh with standard applications built in.
This simulator is free and open source, and CTOnews.com partners can experience it here.
