Daikin, a Japanese air conditioner manufacturer, is turning to customized semiconductors to save energy, and the company is increasingly looking for customized chip designs, CTOnews.com reported on December 1.

Osaka-based Daikin expects to produce 10 million household air conditioners this fiscal year, Reuters reported. The company said it was working with a Japanese design company to customize logic chips for inverters used in its air conditioners.

An executive at Daijin said the custom chip, which will be produced by TSMC, will cost more than off-the-shelf alternatives, but provide better energy efficiency and reduce the use of other components.

Daijin plans to introduce the custom chip in high-end air conditioners from 2025 and plans to use it in about 1/5 of air conditioning units by the end of this decade.

Daikin developed Japan's first combined air conditioner in 1951 and is also developing customized power modules to help manage the power supply of air conditioners. According to CTOnews.com, the number of air conditioners worldwide is expected to more than triple to 5.6 billion by 2050, according to the International Energy Agency.
