CTOnews.com, December 13 (Reuters)-Electric carmaker Tesla has obtained a land use license from the country's Federal Ministry of Environment to build a "super factory" in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon, the government of the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon announced on Tuesday.

The state government says the land designated for the plant is about 261 hectares. Tesla announced plans to build a new plant in Mexico in March this year, but did not provide a specific construction timetable.

The Nuevo Leon government estimates that the project will cost more than $5 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 35.9 billion yuan), but Tesla has not yet disclosed the exact amount of his investment.

Elon Musk, Tesla's chief executive, said in October that he was cautious about plans to build a plant in Mexico given the uncertain economic situation. After his comments, the Nuevo Leon state government said it would spend more than $130 million on supporting the plant's infrastructure. Reuters previously reported that the state of Nuevo Leon had agreed to build substations, natural gas pipelines, railway extensions, roads and water and sewage treatment facilities.

Samuel Garcia, governor of Nuevo Leon state, said in October that the "super factory" is expected to generate about $15 billion in revenue from Tesla and his suppliers over the next two years.

The Mexican government sees the Tesla project as an example of the rise of "nearshore outsourcing", with a growing number of companies wanting to move their production bases closer to the US from Asia.
