CTOnews.com, December 6 (Xinhua)-- xAI, an artificial intelligence start-up owned by Elon Musk, recently filed with the US securities regulator that it plans to raise as much as $1 billion (CTOnews.com Note: about 7.14 billion yuan) through equity financing. The company has raised $134.7 million through equity financing for a total of $1 billion, according to documents on Tuesday.

It is worth mentioning that there is also a note in the document that "for the part to be sold, the issuer has signed a binding and enforceable agreement". This means that xAI may have achieved its financing target of $1 billion.

Since the beginning of this year, fund-raising activities in the field of artificial intelligence have been hot. Financing for AI startups became a bright spot after OpenAI launched the popular chat robot ChatGPT last year and received $10 billion in investment from its strategic partner Microsoft. However, regulators have expressed concern about the potential risk that the technology could be used to spread misinformation.

Musk has been saying publicly that he plans to build safer artificial intelligence. He said at the Twitter Spaces event earlier this year that xAI would not program ethics directly into AI, but would seek to create an "extremely curious" AI.

The billionaire has criticized AI products of big technology companies for being full of censorship. In July, he launched xAI, calling it "the pursuit of the most authentic AI" against Google's Bard and Microsoft's Bing AI.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and launched the ChatGPT that sparked a global frenzy for generative AI technology, but he resigned from OpenAI's board in 2018.

XAI last month launched Grok, a chat robot that competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Musk said in an November post that the artificial intelligence start-up would be integrated into his social media platform X and would also be offered as a stand-alone app.

XAI's team comes from Google's DeepMind, Microsoft and other top AI research companies, which was founded in July this year.
