CTOnews.com December 10 news, recently, bilibili blogger @ Yang Changshun maintainer released a video showing the process of successfully upgrading the flash memory capacity of M3 Max MacBook Pro from the original 1TB to 8TB.

As we all know, Apple has long restricted users from upgrading the storage and memory of the Mac, so that many users can only choose the right configuration at the time of purchase, and can't repair it if it's broken. However, the highly skilled enthusiast took a different approach and installed additional flash memory for the M3 Max MacBook Pro, increasing the storage capacity by as much as eightfold.

The modification process is not simple and requires professional welding tools, robust techniques and in-depth understanding of the internal structure of MacBook Pro. CTOnews.com noted that according to the picture, there are reserved empty solder joints on the M3 Max MacBook Pro motherboard and additional flash chips can be installed. After modification, these empty solder joints are filled with NAND flash memory chips. The original 1TB flash memory of the M3 Max MacBook Pro may have been removed and replaced by four 2TB NAND flash chips with a total capacity of 8TB.

However, it is not enough to install flash memory, you also need to make the necessary software adjustments for macOS to recognize the upgraded storage capacity.

For now, Apple has no plans to change its policy of restricting users from upgrading their own Mac. So if you want to have more storage space, you can either pay for Apple's high upgrade fee or, like this enthusiast, do it yourself.
