The Athletic is the top sports news media in the United States. It has in-depth coverage of hundreds of clubs and teams in major sports leagues around the world, including Premier League, NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLS, PGA, American Women's Football Professional League, NCAA Division I American Football Cup Division, NCAA Men's College Basketball, NCAA Women's College Basketball, La Liga, Champions League and many other projects.

Apple News+ subscribers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia now support viewing The Athletic News in the Apple News Sports section.

In January 2022, The New York Times acquired The Athletic for $550 million (CTOnews.com notes: currently about 3.927 billion yuan), and then closed its sports news department in July.

The New York Times previously ended its partnership with Apple News in June 2020, claiming the service was "inconsistent with its strategy of establishing direct paid reading."

In October, Apple raised the subscription fee for Apple News+ from $9.99 to $12.99 per month, the first price increase since Apple News+ launched in November 2019.
