According to the report, the global 5G download speed has accelerated significantly, to a median of 203.04 Mbps, up 20 per cent from 168.27 Mbps in the third quarter of 2022. In addition, the download speed of users in the top 10% of global 5G download speeds increased from 525.54 Mbps to 573.12 Mbps, an increase of 9%.

It is worth noting that the title of global 5G speed champion has changed from South Korea to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Malaysia, India and the Dominican Republic also made "significant progress" in the top 10.

CTOnews.com noted that the median 5G download speed in the United Arab Emirates increased by 14%, jumping from 511.68 Mbps in the third quarter of 2022 to 592.01 Mbps, ranking first. South Korea is not far behind, with 5G median download speeds reaching 507.59 Mbps.

Ookla believes that one of the key factors contributing to the UAE's excellent performance is "fierce competition between the two telecom giants Etisalat and du", which has contributed to the expansion of 5G coverage across the country. As early as the second quarter of 2023, the United Arab Emirates topped the list with a median download speed of 557.63 Mbps, reflecting the positive impact of competition.

The report also points out that half of the top 10 in 2022 are from the Middle East, and now the Asia-Pacific region accounts for the same proportion. Although the theoretical peak speed of 5G can reach 20 Gbps, it often does not reach the gigabit level in practical applications, mainly due to the constraints of the network economy. "for example, symmetrical download and upload speeds and ultra-low latency have not been fully realized, in part because most 5G networks are not real 5G, but are deployed in NSA mode and rely on 4G LTE network cores," Ookla explained.

In addition to 5G, the report also focuses on the performance of fixed broadband connections. The global median fixed broadband download speed also increased by 19% to 83.95 Mbps, up from 70.30 Mbps in the third quarter of 2022. The UAE once again took the lead, with a median download speed of 247.63 Mbps.

However, Ookla pointed out that despite the continuous development of underlying broadband technology, WiFi often becomes a bottleneck, reducing the user experience. Their research suggests that Wi-Fi performance may lag behind Ethernet in markets where advanced cable and fiber optic connections replace traditional broadband technologies such as DSL or coaxial cable. The Wi-Fi speed is usually only 30-40% of that of Ethernet, indicating the need to accelerate the adoption of more advanced Wi-Fi technologies and optimize the home network environment.
