File: an unix file does not include eof symbols. The length and name of the file are not saved in the file. All the attributes of the file are stored in a special area of the hard disk and are only accessible by the kernel.

Classification of documents:

Ordinary files: also known as standard files, standard files usually save only data in the form of character streams

Directory file: generally speaking, it refers to a directory that contains files and other directories, but strictly speaking, it only contains the name of the file and the corresponding numerical code

Device files: all devices and peripherals can be represented as files.

Normal files: contains text files, binary files.

Note: when you use the cat command to display the contents of a binary file, garbled code will appear on the screen, which may even break the settings of the user terminal.

Directory file: a directory file that does not include data other than the details of the files and subdirectories in the directory

Each record consists of: file name, unique identifier of the file or directory (number of inode nodes)

Note: the directory file contains only the file name, not the file content, the file name can only be found in the directory file, and the file itself does not contain its file name, file size or file access permissions.

Question: you can't write directly to the directory file, but you can do something so that the kernel program can write to the directory file.

Device file: does not use the character stream format, does not contain any content, each file has some attributes are not saved in the file, but saved in a special area on the disk.

Note: the way a device operates depends entirely on the properties of its corresponding device file. The kernel program will distinguish the various devices according to the properties of the devices and use these attributes to control the devices.
