RTMP, a transport protocol, real-time messaging protocol, was originally developed by Macromedia to transfer streaming audio, video and data between a Flash player and a server over the Internet. Macromedia was later acquired by Adobe Systems, and the agreement has issued incomplete specifications for public use.

There are many variations of the RTMP protocol:

TCP port 1935 is used by default.

RTMPS, which transmits RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection.

RTMPE, RTMP encrypted using Adobe's own security mechanism. Although the details of the implementation are proprietary, the mechanism uses industry-standard cryptographic primitive functions. [1]

RTMPT, encapsulated in HTTP to penetrate the firewall. RTMPT typically uses plaintext requests on TCP ports 80 and 443 to bypass most corporate traffic filtering. Encapsulated sessions may carry pure RTMP, RTMPS, or RTMPE packets.

RTMFP, which uses UDP instead of TCP's RTMP, replaces RTMP Chunk Stream. Adobe Systems has developed a secure real-time media streaming protocol package that allows end users to connect directly to each other (P2P).

Although RTMP's main motivation is to become a protocol for playing Flash videos, it is also used in other applications, such as Adobe LiveCycle Data Services ES.
