In the process of continuous optimization of digital infrastructure, the etheric color optical network has been built and explored.

Analysis of the present situation

In this digital age of highly interconnected and rapid dissemination of information, schools need to build their own core influence, and should adhere to the principle of "business-driven" from four aspects: process, system, organization and technology. when the business is digitized through modeling, the school has the ability to change rapidly. The integrated high-speed campus basic network is the key base of digital transformation. it provides a stable transmission environment for various information applications on campus, promotes the sharing of information resources, and promotes the integration and optimization of various businesses on campus. to achieve quality improvement and efficiency.

Xihua University currently has five campuses of Pidu, Yibin, Pengzhou, Rennan and Yisancang, Bangkok, Thailand, with nearly 41000 students. The campus network of Jingdu campus has been in operation for more than 20 years since the end of 1990s.

With the development of cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence, the mode of classroom teaching and students' learning has changed greatly. The endless stream of new businesses in various departments have posed new challenges to the network, and the network infrastructure has become the biggest obstacle to the digital transformation of teaching. After in-depth investigation and analysis, the school has found three key basic capabilities that affect the digital transformation and development of teaching, scientific research, management and other business:

High-speed data transmission capability

With the evolution of the teaching mode in the new era, the school has built many high-quality classrooms and intelligent classrooms. Smart classroom needs to realize the functions of online classroom, online interaction between teachers and students, course recording and broadcasting, and has higher requirements for data transmission rate. In the practice of the new teaching method and the opening of various smart classroom functions, the peak bandwidth demand of the classroom wireless network can reach 2Gbps or above. In the future, with AI-assisted teaching, multi-business scenarios such as normalized recording and broadcasting, online and offline hybrid teaching, AR / VR training and so on, the number of all kinds of intelligent devices in the classroom will continue to increase, and the demand for high-speed data transmission capacity will continue to grow. This will become the core competence that needs to be improved on the road of digital transformation of the school.

Flexible access capability of terminal

With the acceleration of the digital transformation of the school, a large number of intelligent terminals are pouring into colleges and universities, and the wireless access environment has become a key infrastructure. How to build a safe, fast and traceable Internet of things environment, providing a friendly and humanized interactive interface for the new business of teaching and scientific research is an important component of the humanistic campus construction of colleges and universities in the future.

Ability of simple operation and maintenance

The development of artificial intelligence technology provides more feasible space for colleges and universities to streamline organizations, improve efficiency and reduce operation and maintenance costs. however, the basic maintenance workload is difficult to effectively reduce costs and increase efficiency through AI technology. The air in Sichuan Basin is humid, and most of the comprehensive wiring in the school's teaching and office buildings are copper network wires. the equipment is often subjected to damp corrosion and other factors, resulting in a very low line negotiation rate, which can not meet the needs of daily business. At the same time, due to the strong concealment of such faults, it is often necessary to occupy a large number of man-hours of operation and maintenance personnel for troubleshooting, which not only affects the experience of teachers and students using the Internet, but also difficult to achieve the strategic need of schools to simplify the workload of operation and maintenance.

System framework

How to solve the bottlenecks encountered in teaching, scientific research, service, management and other businesses? starting from the top-level design, the Information and Network Management Center of Xihua University hopes to create a new type of campus network that is "integrated", "high-speed", "flexible" and "easy to maintain". Promote the integration of various business data, establish big data analysis and sharing platform, explore data value, and give full play to the supporting role of informatization in school management services and decision-making.

The "Digital Xihua" strategy is designed according to the Digital Campus Construction Standard (trial) of the Ministry of Education. The "digital Xihua all-optical network digital base" and "digital Xihua data center" are constructed in the infrastructure layer to provide a high-quality infrastructure network environment for teaching, office, scientific research, general computing and high-performance computing (figure 1). The "Digital Xihua data Center" is constructed in the supporting platform layer, which realizes data exchange and data governance. In the application layer of the platform, application platforms such as "AI Xihua", "one representation", "staff portrait" and "campus knowledge portal" are constructed to "let teachers and students run errands less" by "making data run more". On the application terminal, a multi-terminal information portal with "web end + mobile end" is built to provide convenient business service windows for teachers and students.

Explore the path

Relying on the integration of new technology to build a network, let the data run on the "highway"

In order to achieve the overall strategic goal of "Digital Xihua", the school takes the construction of basic network facilities as the traction, through the innovative use of Ethernet color optical network scheme, to create an all-optical network base of multi-network convergence, effectively promote "cross-departmental, cross-professional, cross-personnel, cross-terminal, cross-space" data interconnection and sharing, break the isolated island of information, and accelerate the pace of digital transformation of the school.

After in-depth technical route research and on-the-spot investigation, the Information and Network Management Center compared the traditional copper twisted pair networking scheme, gigabit GPON all-optical networking scheme, 10 Gigabit XGSPON networking scheme, Ethernet EPON fusion networking scheme, Ethernet all-color optical network networking scheme, combined with its own historical characteristics and current main tasks, chose the color optical network solution based on Ethernet.

Color light technology is a mature technology which has been developed for many years. It is a kind of all-optical network communication technology realized by wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and passive wavelength division devices. However, due to the high transmission rate of the products equipped with this technology, the price is also more expensive, so it is rarely used in the campus network.

In recent years, driven by the scientific research demand of advanced technologies such as cloud computing and AIGC, the frequency of using data centers in colleges and universities has greatly increased, and 10-gigabit access to the office network has become a reality, so domestic manufacturers have begun to innovate the introduction of color light technology into the campus network, and vigorously invest in R & D resources to reduce the cost of this technology.

After demonstration, the school found that building a digital base around the color light network can build a friendly network environment that everyone can learn, can learn all the time, and can learn everywhere. At the same time, it can also break through the walls of many business systems in the school, so that data can flow more freely. This kind of network is not only high-speed intensive, improve the efficiency of operation and maintenance, management and service, but also meet the requirements of national standards and specifications, but also has a higher advanced nature.

Therefore, the school adopted the Ethernet all-optical network scheme with color optical network technology as the core, upgrading 29 buildings and a total of more than 2000 rooms in the school. (figure 2)

Application effect

Build a digital base that everyone can learn, can learn everywhere, and can learn all the time.

Xihua University has found another way, through color light technology to achieve 100G backbone network, 80g color light transmission to the building, 10G optical equipment into the room to deploy, to achieve high-quality campus access network, effectively supporting the ubiquitous learning of the whole scene of the whole school.

Relying on the ubiquitous high-speed wireless network, teachers and students can access teaching resources, share resources and production resources anytime and anywhere, and cooperate with schools to create learning spaces and learning gardens with different styles in various teaching buildings. it provides convenience for students' self-study, group discussion and other activities, and it is convenient for students to sit down and memorize words, practice listening, study online lessons, comb their notes and exchange ideas in their spare time. Improve learning efficiency and learning quality, and promote the incubation of teaching results. (figure 3)

The Integration of Digital Technology and New Teaching method to promote the New Development of Digital Education

Classroom, as the main battlefield for the school to train talents, provides a carrier for the application of new teaching methods. Xihua University not only supports the application of conventional PBL / TBL teaching methods, but also integrates ISW teaching skills workshop into it. ISW takes BOPPPS effective teaching mode as the core concept, adopts participatory and group experiential learning methods, and the classroom information level is constantly upgraded.

The traditional Ethernet scheme has many shackles in dealing with the adjustment of teaching equipment and the change of teaching methods. The traditional all-optical network scheme solves the problems of high bandwidth and rapid deployment, while the color optical network is based on the former. Through passive deployment and wavelength division technology, the innovative effect of multi-network convergence and simplified operation and maintenance is realized.

Nowadays, teachers' large screens, student group screens, wireless AP, Internet of things, network control, cameras and many other devices belonging to different subnets in smart classrooms can be uniformly carried through the color optical network (traffic between services do not interfere with each other, wave division isolation), which greatly improves the speed of business scheduling, saves investment costs, and reduces the workload of operation and maintenance. It also helps the new teaching method to land more conveniently, helps teachers and students absorb classroom knowledge more quickly, and provides clearer and stable digital education resources for teachers and students who follow up to watch learning courses through the intelligent teaching platform. Multi-service integration and bearer, let the data run on the "highway"

In the process of promoting the reform of the business model of teaching and management, the school takes the construction of school infrastructure as the traction, supports the digital transformation, the development of teaching and scientific research, and optimizes the operation and efficiency as the goal. Through the construction of a color optical network core base of integration and innovation, effectively promote "cross-departmental, cross-professional, cross-personnel, cross-terminal, cross-space" data interconnection and sharing, and break the isolated island of information. Promote the digital transformation of smart campus, use integrated digital technology to build a new model of education and management, and strive to achieve new results.

"AI Xihua" is an one-stop service platform for on-campus business, which integrates teacher service, scientific research service, school life, educational administration service, personal business, IT service and public service. It covers the relevant processing processes of various units in the school and provides convenience for teachers and students. Thanks to the construction of the new color optical network, the network coverage, transmission rate and convergence carrying capacity of the school have been greatly improved, which makes the application of "AI Xihua" more streamlined and the scene utilization rate greatly improved. At present, more than 60 business processes have been configured by "AI Xihua", involving more than 10 departments. The platform has realized core businesses such as data center integration and sharing, unified identity authentication, and will be deeply integrated with education and teaching, scientific research, and personnel training, so as to solve the online flow of relevant business processes of various departments in the school, and improve work efficiency.

Through the construction and exploration of the color light network, the teaching and scientific research data of Xihua University have run on the "fusion highway" in an all-round way, which has really realized "let the data run more, teachers and students run fewer errands", and promoted "service quality improvement and efficiency". It has laid a solid foundation for wisdom teaching, wisdom scientific research, wisdom management, wisdom operation, wisdom service and so on.
