CTOnews.com, December 15 (Xinhua) the European Commission has issued a formal inquiry order to Apple and Google asking the two technology giants what measures they have to identify and mitigate "systemic risks" in their app stores.

The European Commission said it was looking for information on how App Store and Play Store could mitigate systemic risks, particularly those related to the dissemination of illegal and harmful content, and how to protect them from the negative impact of bad information on public safety, public health and minors.

The European Commission also requested more information on the transparency of "recommendation systems and online advertising".

At present, the EU only mentions "illegal and harmful content" in its inquiry order, and it is not clear exactly what to inquire about.

According to the European Commission statement, Google and Apple must comply with the information request by January 15. Once the information is available, the European Commission will decide whether formal proceedings are required under Article 66 of the DSA.
