According to CCTV news reports, after the earthquake, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology quickly organized the communications administrations of Gansu and Qinghai provinces, as well as China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Railway Tower and other enterprises to carry out video dispatching to verify and judge the operation of the communication network and the damage of communication facilities in the disaster areas, and direct the gathering of emergency communication forces to go to the front line of the disaster areas overnight. The communications administrations of Gansu and Qinghai provinces immediately launched emergency plans and organized the local information and communications industry to carry out emergency communications repairs quickly to ensure the safe and smooth flow of earthquake relief lifelines, support lines, and command lines.

As of 14:00 on December 19, 279 of the 314 base stations that had been returned to service due to the earthquake and power outages had been repaired and two interrupted communication optical cables had been ransacked. CTOnews.com previously quoted CCTV news as saying that as of 12:00 today, the earthquake had killed 13 people in Qinghai, injured 182, lost contact with 20, and damaged some infrastructure such as water, electricity, transportation and communications. Earlier, a press conference was held in Gansu Province to announce that the earthquake had killed 105 people in Gansu.
