CTOnews.com, December 21, according to the latest report from Counterpoint Research, global smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.2 billion units in 2023, down 5% from the same period last year and the lowest level in nearly a decade. Shipments are expected to increase 3% year-on-year to 312 million units in the fourth quarter.

▲ Touyuan CounterpointCTOnews.com learned from the report that Counterpoint believes shipments in North America and Europe will be the same as last year, but China and emerging markets such as the Middle East and Africa (MEA) and India have successfully reversed the trend and will become the new growth engine of the smartphone market from the fourth quarter of 2023. Smartphone shipments are expected to grow by 3% year-on-year in 2024, showing a relatively healthy trend.

The agency expects iPhone sales to fall 3% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2023, mainly due to Huawei's expansion in the Chinese market and the extended replacement cycle of smartphones in Japan. Apple will offset the decline in sales with an increase in value through a better product portfolio.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the iPhone 14 Pro series accounted for 61% of shipments in the entire iPhone 14 series. The share of the iPhone 15 Pro series in the iPhone 15 series is expected to increase to 65 per cent by the fourth quarter of 2023.

Huawei achieved great success in the third quarter of 2023 with its new Mate 605G series and old P-series 4G devices, the agency said. Assuming Huawei can expand production of Kirin SoC through partnerships with partners, the brand is expected to maintain 37 per cent year-on-year growth in 2024.
