CTOnews.com, December 23 (Xinhua)-- existing biped robots can perform tasks such as crossing uneven terrain, but their mechanical structures are usually very complex, so they are relatively large.
A team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University recently developed the Mugatu robot, which uses a new walking mechanism to reduce its height to 18.5cm (7.3in) and hopes to further simplify the compression to less than 4cm (1.6in) in the future.
Mugatu's design was inspired by Wilson Walkie, a popular unpowered wooden doll in the 1930s. When the doll was placed at the top of the ramp, gravity dragged its legs back and forth to the bottom.
Mugatu uses a hip motor to simulate biped motion, with the robot standing still at first, with legs side by side. Then the motor drives to swing the left leg, the robot's center of gravity moves to the left leg, and the robot leans forward and places the center of gravity on the left foot.
Mugatu is supported by the left foot, and the motor controls the movement of the right leg, and then cycles back and forth to achieve walking. The demo video attached to CTOnews.com is as follows:
