Virtual local area network (VLAN) is a group of logical devices and users, which are not limited by physical location. VLAN is a relatively new technology, which works in layer 2 and layer 3 of the OSI reference model. An VLAN is a broadcast domain, and the communication between VLAN is accomplished through a layer 3 router. In a computer network, a layer 2 network can be divided into several different broadcast domains, and one broadcast domain corresponds to a specific user group. By default, these different broadcast domains are isolated from each other. To communicate between different broadcast domains, you need to go through one or more routers. Such a broadcast domain is called VLAN.
