When the tenant network is connected to the Neutron router, router is usually used as the default gateway.

When router receives a packet from instance and forwards it to the public network:

1. Router modifies the source address of the packet to its own public network address to ensure that the packet is forwarded to the public network and can be returned from the public network.

2. Router modifies the returned packet and forwards it to the real instance.

This behavior is called Source NAT.

If you need to access instance directly from the external network, you can take advantage of floating IP.

Here are the facts you must know about floating IP:

1. Floating IP provides static NAT function to establish an one-to-one mapping between public network IP and instance tenant network IP.

2. Floating IP is configured on the public network interface where router provides the gateway, not in instance.

3. Router modifies the source or destination address of the packet according to the direction of the communication.

Let's learn more about floating IP through experiments.

Click Project-> Compute-> Access & Security menu to open the Floating IPs tab.

Click the Allocate IP To Project button.

Floating IP Pool is ext_net, click the "Allocate IP" button.

An IP 10.10.10.3 was successfully assigned from Pool. Let's assign it to cirror-vm3 and click the "Associate" button.

Select cirror-vm3 from the drop-down list and click the "Associate" button.

Assigned successfully, floating IP 10.10.10.3 already corresponds to IP 172.16.101.3, the tenant of cirros-vm3.
