The principle is to modify the / boot/config.txt file of the raspberry pie and append a program_usb_boot_mode flag bit to it.

After reboot, the raspberry pie system will write the flag bit in the OTP memory of the raspberry pie according to this flag bit. This memory is embedded in the SOC chip. Once written, it will be irreversible.

Then write the system in the U disk according to the usual method.

Steps:

Update the system to make sure it is a version later than 2017-04-10

$sudo apt-get update & & sudo apt-get upgrade

Type in the terminal, modify the / boot/config.txt file of the raspberry pie, and append a program_usb_boot_mode flag bit to the end. :

Echo program_usb_boot_mode=1 | sudo tee-a / boot/config.txt

Restart the system

Then enter

$vcgencmd otp_dump | grep 17VOR 17RU 303020000a

Confirm that the output is: 0x3020000a. If not, it means that the flag bit was written to OTP memory unsuccessfully.

If you feel it necessary, in config.txt, delete the last line you just added related to program_usb_boot_mode=1.

Otherwise, if this SD card is inserted into other raspberry pies, it will rewrite the OTP memory of other raspberry pies.

Then redo the system in the flash drive.

Follow-up:

At present, it is possible for some people to try the 32-gigabyte USB drive, but not the 64-gigabyte one.

I tested three USB drives at home and found that the compatibility was not very objective.

One of my friends DIY's USB 2.0 USB disk can support it, but the speed is relatively slow, and you can feel that the system is obviously running stutter than SD card.

Kingston DataTraveler 100G3 16G sudo reboot USB 3.0, the system can run normally, the speed is about the same as the SD card, but there is no way to restart after USB. It seems to be turned off by default.

There is also one of the fastest USB3.0 USB drives. After completing the system, there is no response when plugged in.
