Since most companies that use Windows servers are still on top of server 2008 systems, server 2016, as the latest server system version of Windows, will gradually become popular over time, so how can our server 2008 improve its function level without affecting its normal work? Today, I would like to share with you the specific process of upgrading the functional level of the domain.

First, two servers are needed to do this, one server 2008, which we call DC01 below, and one server 2016, which we call DC02.

There are many steps to complete this operation, which can be divided into the following steps.

Expand DC01's forest architecture and domain architecture, update group policy object permissions, and update AD's support for RODC (read-only domain controllers). Join DC02 to an existing domain and promote to an additional domain controller transfer FSMO (operations host role) to DC02 and demote DC01 to a normal member server. Upgrade the AD domain and forest functional levels to server 2016

The specific steps are as follows:

Insert server 2016 on DC01. CD, the drive letter is D:. (change according to the actual drive letter of the disc you insert). Open a command prompt, enter the command "d:" and jump to the partition D where the disc is located. Continue to enter the command "cd support\ adprep" at the command prompt to enter the adprep directory. Then continue to enter the command "adprep.exe/forestprep" (if it is a 32-bit operating system, you need to enter the command "adprep32.exe/forestprep") after the following warning prompt, enter C and press enter to confirm.

7. Continue to enter the command "adprep.exe/domainprep" at the command prompt to expand the domain architecture of DC01, as shown in the following figure:

8. Continue to enter the command at the command prompt: "adprep.exe/domainprep / gpprep"

9. Enter the command "adprep.exe / rodcprep" at the command prompt to update AD's support for RODC, as shown in the following figure, where errors can be ignored.

10. Join DC02 to the domain of DC01 and promote to an additional domain controller (check to see if DC01's information is synchronized to DC02), then change the preferred DNS address of DC02 to point to the DC02 server itself.

11. Enter "regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll" in the run box on DC02, press enter to confirm, and install the architecture host management tool. As shown in the following figure:

twelve。 For role transfer on DC02, enter the "mmc" command in the run box, open the console, select "File" and then select: add / remove snap-ins, add "AD Architecture", "AD users and computers", "AD Domain and Trust relationship", three snap-ins, click OK. As shown in the following figure:

13. After adding, right-click the AD schema, click "change AD Domain Controller", pop up the following dialog box, and select DC02.

14. After confirming, it will prompt the following error, ignore it, then right-click the AD schema, click "Operation Host", pop up the following dialog box, confirm it, and click change.

Transferring other operation hosts is more or less the same as this step, and all operate on this console. I will not repeat it here. The reference figure is as follows:

16. After transferring the five operating hosts, type "dcpromo" in the run box on DC01 to reduce it to a normal member server.

17. After uninstalling the domain controller through the wizard, you also need to remove the AD domain service role and the DNS service from the console.

19.。 When finished, restart server2008 and right-click "AD users and computers" on the console of server 2016. Select: upgrade the domain function level, and select server 2016 in the pop-up dialog box. Click OK.

20. Continue to right-click on the console of server2016: "AD Domain and Trust relationship", select upgrade forest functional level, and select functional level as server2016.

Well, at this point, server 2008 AD has been upgraded to server 2016 AD.
