Microsoft open source Azure RTOS embedded system, renamed Eclipse ThreadX

CTOnews.com November 29, Microsoft Azure RTOS is an embedded development kit with ThreadX real-time operating system that has been deployed on more than 12 billion devices around the world.

Microsoft recently announced that Azure RTOS will transition to open source under the management of the Eclipse Foundation, a recognized leader in hosting open source Internet of things projects.

According to reports, based on the new support of the Eclipse Foundation, Azure RTOS will be renamed Eclipse ThreadX-a comprehensive embedded development kit, including a small but powerful real-time operating system that provides reliable and fast performance for resource-constrained devices and supports the most popular 32-bit microcontrollers and embedded development tools.

CTOnews.com learned from the announcement that starting from the first quarter of 2024, the Eclipse ThreadX program will be available under the MIT license and can be accessed from the Eclipse ThreadX website, including ThreadX, NetX Duo, FileX, GUIX, USBX, LevelX and related tools and documentation. Microsoft will provide the latest certification for the project to achieve continuity of safety and security certification versions.

With its comprehensive attributes, Eclipse will rapidly expand its adoption in a wide range of use cases such as aerospace, automotive, Internet of things, healthcare, transportation, automation and consumer wearables, the ThreadX Foundation said.
