CTOnews.com, Nov. 30, Apple announced today that it will be the first and largest customer of Amkor's new manufacturing and packaging plant in Peoria, Arizona. Amkor will package some of Apple's chips, which will be produced at a nearby TSMC plant.

According to Apple, Amkor will invest about $2 billion in the plant, which will employ more than 2000 people when it is completed.

"Apple is firmly committed to the future of American manufacturing, and we will continue to expand our investment in the United States," Apple Operations President Jeff Williams said in a press release today. "Apple chips unlock new levels of performance for our users, enabling them to do things they have never done before, and we are pleased that Apple chips will soon be manufactured and packaged in Arizona."

Amkor announced in a press release today that it plans to start limited production at the plant in the next two to three years. The company said it had applied to the US federal government for CHIPS funds to help fund the project.

Apple says Amkor has been encapsulating chips used in all its products for more than a decade. Apple chips are used in iPhone, iPad, Mac and other devices, but it is not clear which chips will be packaged at the new Arizona plant.
