Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, December 9 (Xinhua)-- supply chain consultancy DSCC recently released a report on the market for folding screen phones in the third quarter of this year, saying that thanks to the launch of Samsung Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 and the release of new phones from major brands in China, the quarter became a record quarter for shipments of folding screen phones and folding panels.

According to the data, shipments of folding screen phones in this quarter increased 215 per cent compared with the previous quarter, and year-on-year growth of 16 per cent to 7 million units, 1 per cent higher than expected.

In terms of market share, Samsung ranked first with a market share of 72% in the quarter, but down from 86% last year, as competitors launched more models and pursued higher sales. Huawei and Glory were the second and second runners-up respectively, with 9 per cent for the former and 8 per cent for the latter.

In terms of models, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 accounts for 45% of the market share of the Galaxy Z Fold 5, while Huawei Mate X3 and Glory Magic V2 each have 6% of the market.

DSCC expects shipments of folding screen phones to fall 35% month-on-month in the fourth quarter of this year, up 47% from a year earlier to 3.6 million units, due to lower-than-expected Samsung shipments.

Samsung's market share in folding screen phones is forecast to fall from 83 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year to about 42 per cent in the fourth quarter of this year, while Huawei's share will soar to 21 per cent and Glory 19 per cent. Of these, Huawei's share of Mate X5 phones is expected to rise to 15 per cent.

For the whole of this year, shipments of folding screen phones are expected to grow 23% to 15.8 million units. The top five models in 2023 are expected to be Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 4, Glory Magic V2 and Huawei Mate X5.

Ross Young, CEO of DSCC, believes that this year has been a mixed year for foldable devices. Thanks to Huawei's regaining its foothold and gaining a significant share, as well as a number of new entrants such as Google, Yijia and Tecno, as well as improvements in thickness, weight, creases and other aspects of the equipment, it is also impressive.

We have also seen Chinese panel suppliers increase production, grab the share of Samsung displays and introduce many innovative products previously available only to Samsung displays, such as the LTPO, POL-LESS and UTG.

However, with the market for high-end Android smartphones still in the doldrums, sales of foldable phones in 2023 ended up 15% lower than we predicted in the first quarter of this year.

According to previous reports from CTOnews.com, another research firm, TrendForce, predicted in September that the market penetration of folding screen phones would reach 1.6% this year. Shipments of folding screen smartphones will soar to 18.3 million units in 2023, an increase of 43% over the same period last year.
