CTOnews.com, December 21, according to the latest report released by market research firm IDC, it is estimated that global augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) head shipments in 2023 are 8.1 million units, down 8.3% from the same period last year.

The report points out that Sony's PSVR and Meta's Quest 3 are relatively popular, but the global AR / VR headline growth has been curbed by multiple factors such as macroeconomic pressures and slowing spending in the business sector.

IDC believes that Meta's Quest 3 and Apple's Vision Pro will lead to a significant increase in AR / VR head shipments in 2024, with an estimated year-on-year growth of 46.4%.

In terms of manufacturers, Meta accounted for 55.2% of the total in the third quarter of 2023 and is expected to continue to achieve year-on-year growth in 2024.

Jitesh Ubrani, research manager of IDC mobile and consumer device trackers, said:

While the new VR headlines are expected to boost sales, they are also likely to alienate some consumers as average selling prices rise.

The high price of the Vision Pro may confine the device to enterprises, while the more readily available Quest 3 is also stimulating consumer purchases.
