By default, paragraphs

The default display value for (block-level elements) is block, but can be rendered as inline values:

P {display:inline;}

Why not use a HTML inline element, such as?

Because you chose the HTML element to represent its meaning, not its rendering. If we decide that a paragraph is best for our content, we can't change the tag just for styling purposes. CSS implements the style.

In short, display allows you to change the type of an element without changing its meaning.

Each display option has a specific rendering behavior:

Block will occupy the entire width

Inline will be plain text

Inline-block, as its name implies, is a complex of blocky and inline behavior, and the choice of "the best of both worlds".

List-item is similar to block that takes up the entire width available, but shows an extra bullet

Table,table-row and table-cell both have very specific, although unexpected, behavior, to make more interesting layouts.

Display:block

This converts any element to a block element.

This technique is often used for links to increase their clickable areas and can be easily evaluated by setting the background color.
