The MDS process that receives the MDirUpdate class message first finds the updated CDir class object corresponding to the Dir. If the CDir class object does not exist and the should_discover is specified in the MDirUpdate class message, it sends a discover request to the MDS process sending the MDirUpdate class message to obtain the specified Dir information, otherwise, the dir_rep and dir_rep_by fields of the local CDir class object are updated.
