CTOnews.com, December 18 (Xinhua)-- Tesla's long-awaited 3D aerial parking assist system has finally arrived. although it is not a traditional bird's-eye view, this function called "high-precision parking assistance" is even more powerful.

Previously, aerial view, as an auxiliary system overlooking the environment of the car from the roof, has long been popular in high-end models, and has gradually sunk in popularity in recent years. However, Tesla, as a leader in the industry, has been absent from this configuration. CTOnews.com noted that in 2020, Tesla CEO Musk said the feature would be launched soon, but this promise dragged on for more than three years.

Now, the wait is finally over. Ashok Elluswamy, head of Tesla's self-driving software, announced that "high-precision parking assistance" will be pushed to Tesla models without ultrasonic sensors as part of holiday updates. This function replaces the previous 2D obstacle display and replaces the plan view with high-resolution 3D scene reconstruction to help parking in narrow spaces.

"obstacles are modeled in the form of continuous distance fields, allowing us to represent arbitrary shapes in a smooth and efficient manner," Elluswamy explained. "the vehicle you see is not a pre-set grid, but a shape predicted by the network in real time."

Elluswamy said the feature would be launched as part of Tesla's holiday update, making up for the thinness of the previously reported update. It is important to note, however, that this feature currently applies only to Tesla Vision models without ultrasonic sensors (Model 3 / Y after 2022 and Model S / X after 2023). Elluswamy said the feature would eventually apply to older Tesla models with ultrasonic sensors, but did not give a specific timetable.

Tesla's holiday update has always attracted much attention, but this year's content was once considered to be lacklustre. Today, the addition of "high-precision parking assistance" has undoubtedly added a big surprise to the update.
