According to the "Insight of shipments of generative AI smartphones" recently released by market research firm Counterpoint Research, it is estimated that 2024 will be the key year of generative AI smartphones, with shipments of 100 million units.

The agency estimates that global shipments of generative AI smartphones will reach 522 million units by 2027, a compound annual growth rate of 83 per cent.

The agency's definition of "generative AI phone" is classified under the AI smartphone category, which means that you can use generative AI to create original content and run AI models locally.

The agency believes that Samsung and Qualcomm are direct leaders.

Similar to Samsung's current position in the foldable phone market, Samsung is likely to have nearly 50 per cent of the market over the next two years, followed by major Chinese brand handset makers such as Xiaomi, vivo, Glory and OPPO.

Qualcomm is likely to account for more than 80 per cent of the GenAI smartphone market over the next two years.

Tarun Pathak, director of research, said:

The share of generative AI smartphones in the entire smartphone market will reach single digits next year. But these figures do not accurately reflect the level of excitement and marketing exaggeration we expect to see.

Next year is a critical year, and we expect generative AI smartphones to reach an inflection point in 2026, as these devices will infiltrate a wider range of prices.
